An article was recently released in August 2016 that assesses the ‘impact that flood action groups on the uptake of flood management measures’ based on a study in Scotland. By assessing four household flood protection measures, there was a clear identification of a positive trend in the uptake of this flood protection through the use of flood action groups within several small communities in Scotland.
In total, 124 private households across 34 communities were involved in the completion of this data, out of the 600 that were contacted, with all participants having been subject to flooding in the past (with 75% classifying as severe).
This was undertaken in three ways. By monitoring:
- The uptake of flood protection measures prior to the establishment of the local flood action group.
- The uptake of flood protection measures following the establishment of the local flood action group.
- Motivation for the implementation of future flood measures.
In conclusion, a positive effect was identified for the uptake of flood insurance and floodgates, and a concluding statement identifies the increase in uptake of precautionary measures as a result of flood action groups in small communities in Scotland. This may be done through the dissemination of specific information to affected areas.
